The challenge for this project was to transform an old fashioned two bedroom ground floor flat into a contemporary, serene, and flowing space without tearing down walls or adding to the existing footprint. This was done within the existing constraints of existing rooms, a realistic budget and a short 7 week program. The desire to de-clutter was a key part of the brief so we carried out a series of interior studies to introduce as much wall storage as possible without taking over the rooms. The 4ft void beneath the house was also used to create 'storage cubes' hidden under the floors and accessible by trap doors
The rear french doors were replaced with taller folding sliding doors connecting the inside to the simple decking and garden beyond and bringing more light into the living room.
The decision to cover walls and cupboards in a clean lined timber cladding create a continuity in the bedrooms and hallway. Floor boards were painted a grey white to follow this linear pattern. Warm indirect lighting, glazed doorways, and a simple pallet of colors and materials expands the sense of space in the flat.
